Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio bridge, one of Florence celebrated landmarks, is the main sight that can be enjoyed from the windows of Palazzo Serristori Residence which is the ideal starting point for a tour of Florence and its historic centre. Over the centuries, the bridge was rebuilt several times following extensive damage due to flooding and wars, therefore it is difficult to date its exact origin. According to some historians, its present appearance was the work of Taddeo Gaddi or Neri di Fioravante.

The unique look of the Ponte Vecchio was also the work of Vasari, whom Cosimo dei Medici charged with the construction of a corridor joining Palazzo Pitti with Palazzo Vecchio, realized in 1565. The 1 km corridor named Corridoio Vasariano was spared destruction in the German bombings of the Second World War thanks to Gerhard Wolf’s mediation. The man was made honorary citizen of Florence and is remembered in a plaque on the bridge.

Lining both sides of the Ponte Vecchio are the craft shops that give the historic bridge its characteristic appearance. They are set in old porticoes facing the central walkway. Up until 1593 the Ponte Vecchio shops were mostly used by butchers (“beccai” in Florentine dialect), who used to discard waste from meat processing in the river Arno. Since 1593, at the behest of Ferdinand I who could not stand the smell of meat, the Ponte Vecchio has been home exclusively to goldsmith shops.
In the middle of the bridge two panoramic terraces interrupt the line of shops.
